I think it is invaluable to keep in mind typical conventions throughout the process of gaining inspiration, refining ideas, designing and the making of the digipak so that it will be allowed to be reminiscent of real digipaks and will seem believable and professional.
The conventions I have found include:
- Album name on the front
- Band/artist name on the front
- Barcode on the back
- Track list on the back
- Album artwork (either photograph or illustration, but some form of design on the front)
- Record company (either on back or front corner)
- Copyright/dates/warning on back
Other conventions which apply only to digipaks and not just normal albums include:
- Lyrics
- Further artwork
- Insert (postcard/poster etc)
- Photographs
However these conventions are more flexible than the other list above as a digipak is added extras to a normal album so it's more adjustable in terms of what you want to do with it. The list of conventions above just apply to consistently occuring conventions I have came across regularly when looking at and researching digipaks.
