Inspiration for music video- All Of The Lights - Kanye West ft. Rihanna
All of the lights, sung by Kanye West was released on 18th of January 2011 and was part of his forth album 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy'. It features vocals from Kid Cudi, John Legend, Elly Jackson, Drake, Alicia Keys, Fergie, Elton John and Rihanna. The video was produced and directed by Kanye West.
This is an The video begins with the 'All of the lights interlude' (which is a seperate music track to 'All of The Lights'). It shows a league board then a little girl walking out of the building (presumably with the league board in it) into the snow. The video is in black and white, which gives it a bleak feeling. Pathetic Fallocy is used as the weather matches the mood that the music is creating. As the girl continues to walk through the snow an enigma code is created, as it makes the audience question why a girl as young as four of five is walking through a town on her own. The shots of the buildings enforce how bleak and miserable the scene is. At this point the video doesn't have a 'genre category' as there hasn't been any lyrics. It appears the girl has been walking for a while as the weather gets dark, she stops and looks around then different colours start flashing on the screen.
This indicates a change of scene as the music dies out and suddenly 'All of the lights' is sung in snychronisation with the lyrics appearing on the screen. You then see the words 'Kanye West' flashing on a black background in the same colours that flashed first when the little girl was looking around. The lyrics then appear on the screen as Rihanna sings, this adds quite a fast moving pace to the video and is also quite unique as none of the performers are actually seen. The lyrics proceed to appear on screen, the record company and other artists names are mentioned also.
At 2:05 you see the sillouhette of Kanye West dancing with the same lights flashing then him holding his head where the lyrics say ' i hold my head '. This would mean that the music video is an amplification, possibly an illustration as the lyrics are just on the screen.
It appears he is telling a story as the sillouhettes and the flashing coloured lights are shown when he is rapping. The editing is fast and there are constantly flashing lights which links to the title.
When Rihanna begins to sing it shows her singing but without any lights flashing, this could imply it isn't her story to tell.
On the line 'She need her Daddy' a picture (in colour) of the little girl at the beginning of the video, this joins the two sequences together as it is implied that the girl at the beginning is Kanye's daughter. The video then proceeds to see Kanye singing with the flashing silouhettes of him singing, and him on top of the police car. That could imply that he possibly wants to be on top of the law?
You then see the font from the beginning of the video return as the lyrics are sung. This provides closure to the video.
The editing in this video is extremely fast to match the pace of the flashing lights. This involves the cutting rate being extremely fast. The editing was slower at the beginning to match the pace of the music and possibly make a bigger contrast to when the main bit of the video begun.
The camera angles were mainly midshot when focusing on the artists, however it was a high angle shot when focusing on Kanye ontop of the police car, and a low angle shot when focusing on the little girl. This shows different perspectives of the characters in the video.
