Analysing Flourescent Adolescent - Arctic Monkeys
I decided to do Flourescent Adolescent as I like the song and find the video interesting.
This is the section I have tubechopped which I think most shows a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals explaining the lyrics. As before it is unclear why the clowns and detectives are fighting, it becomes clear they haven't always been enemies by using a flashback of the clown and the detective. As the clown is punching the detective the words 'how did it come to this?' appear on screen, showing what the character is thinking. This illustrates the lyrics further as when they are children on the swings, the child lip-syncs 'Where did you go?' to the child detective. This adds more meaning to the lyrics.
This clip shows that there is a relationshipbetween the music and the visuals. As the video starts off as being silent until the men get out of the cars then the music starts. This builds tension and the upbeat music represents the fighting and the anger between the clowns and the men. There is no lyrics for the first twenty seconds as it builds the atmosphere of a fight, perhaps set in the 1970's (judging by the cars). The focus of the camera then changes as soon as the lyrics begin, where it focuses on the specific conflict between the man in black and the red and white clown. This is an enigma code and would make the watcher want to know what was happening, the reason and the outcome of their fight.
The genre of this video is 'indie/alternative' other videos from the Arctic Monkeys show that they don't have a particular style, here is an example of some of their other videos.
These three videos show that the band doesn't have a specific style when making music videos, as these videos are all completely different yet has the similar style of music. This could be said for most 'indie/alternative' bands. Whereas in pop, rock, rap music videos there is a more specific and noticable style considering which genre it is.
Normally record companies would expect to see the band members a lot throughout the video, however this video does not follow that convention as there is a very short clip where younger pictures of the band members are shown. This goes very well with the style of the music video, as it fits in with the story that the lyrics are telling.
